Thank you to all those who came out to volunteer and donate blood on Saturday, March 29! All blood donations (and points for those who attempted to donate) will be donated to three year old Leukemia patient Daniel Wedge IV. Daniel was diagnosed on December 5, 2013 with a blood cancer known as T-Cell Leukemia. His first transfusion was needed on December 6. Since then, he has needed 10 blood transfusions. For an indefinite period, chemotherapy is give to avoid relapse. Chemo affects healthy cells such as red blood cells. For this reason, during the course of his treatment, transfusions of platelets and red blood cells will be needed. His treatment can last 2-3 years.
Daniel is being treated at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans as of March 11, 2014. Daniel has needed 10 (10) transfusions. The Blood Center is the hostpital’s blood provider. Currently they are treating 1,100 patients battling cancer, requiring over 13,500 blood components annually.
We had more than 15 people donate blood and an additional 6 who gave “blood points” and many volunteers who helped recruit donors. Thanks to all who gave their time!
We plan on hosting another blood drive this year. Details TBD. To donate, you must be in good health, at least 17 years of age and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. There is no upper age limit. Individuals with high blood pressure (below 180/100) or controlled diabetes can now donate, according to the Blood Center.
