14 Ways To Protect and Help Seniors During COVID-19
Everyone is at risk of getting COVID-19. However, older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions may be at higher risk for contractive COVID-19 and suffering more severe symptoms. However, we also understand mental health is a serious concern for all those quarantining, especially those who have stricter precautions they must take. Here are some ways to protect older adults and anyone who has a serious underlying medical condition:
- Avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19
- Practice social distancing
- Stay home as much as possible to prevent spreading the virus of COVID-19
- Avoid close contact with others (stay at least 6 ft. away or 2 arm lengths away from one another)
- Wear cloth covering mask over your mouth and nose in public settings
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces to avoid getting the coronavirus
- Wash your hands with water and soap for 20 seconds
- Use an alcoholic-based hand sanitizer with 60% or more alcohol
- When possible, participate in online activities (banking, grocery shopping, doctor visits, etc.)
Here are some ways to help the mental health of older adults and anyone who has a serious underlying medical condition required to quarantine alone:
- Call or video chat frequently; check-in on them and spend time virtually
- Download interactive apps (either on their apps or when you are together on video chat), such as games, quizzes, or even educational apps
- Send them food or nice genstures such as flowers, desserts, plants or even DIY kits
- Visit but stay your distance; say hi from a window or door (make signs or crafts to make them feel special)
- Give them ideas or projects to stay active, such as gardening, cooking, arts and crafts, etc.
