How to Stay Healthy When the Weather Changes
New Orleans weather is notorious for changing at a moment’s notice. We all know how it is- hot one day, freezing the next! But did you know weather changes also greatly affect your health?
Weather conditions can change the body’s regulation and lower your immune system. We usually see a spike in patients at Westbank Urgent Care whenever the weather changes drastically.
Here are some easy tips to avoid getting sick when the temperature changes:
1) Stay Hydrated
Drinking several glasses of water daily is necessary. Water protects your body from illness and disease by flushing toxins and helps you absorb nutrients.
2) Maintain Good Hygiene
Be defensive! Keep those germs away by habituating smart hygiene practices, like covering your coughs and sneezes or washing your hands. Wash your body often, preferably every day. Always change into clean clothes at least once or twice a day, especially undergarments.
3) Eat a Balanced Diet
Your body is like a machine, it will perform best when it is given the best fuel! Eat foods full of antioxidants, which are nutrient that strengthens your immune system. Three major antioxidants are beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Many fruits and vegetables contain these vitamins, especially those with purple, blue, orange, and yellow hues.
4) Dress Accordingly
It is sometimes difficult to anticipate quick weather changes. Dressing in layers is a great way to get around this problem. Always keep a coat, sweater, or scarf with you to protect your body from sudden cold weather.
Sleeping for seven to eight hours recharges your body and strengthens your immune system. If you are able to nap between activities throughout the day, take advantage. Sometimes naps can be more effective than a short night sleep!
