Clostridium tetani<\/em> are <\/span>\n bacteria that live in soil and manure<\/a>. Tetanus infections most commonly happen when you <\/span>\n suffer a wound<\/a> that gives the bacteria a chance to enter your body. For example, <\/span>\n stepping on a nail<\/a> is a common cause of tetanus infections. Once inside your body, the <\/span>\n bacteria release a toxin<\/a> that causes your muscles to tighten. This can cause your mouth to \u201clock\u201d shut and make it hard to swallow.
