Sports Physicals in New Orleans: Requirements, Cost & What to Expect at The Urgent Care

It is back-to-school season, and for many students, the start of a new school year also means the return of sports practices, tryouts, and games. Before stepping onto the field, court, or track, student-athletes may need a sports physical to ensure they are ready to participate safely.

At The Urgent Care, we provide quick, convenient, and affordable sports physicals in New Orleans and the surrounding area for children, teenagers, and young adults preparing for a new season. We offer sports and school physicals at our Uptown, Mid-City, Gretna, Harvey, and LaPlace locations. We accept walk-ins, so no appointment is necessary to receive a sports physical.

What is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE) or a sport preparticipation physical exam (SPPE), is a medical evaluation designed to determine whether a student is physically prepared to participate in their respective sport.

Sports physical requirements can vary by school, league, and athletic organization, but many organized and competitive sports require student-athletes to complete a physical before participating. This commonly includes sports such as football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, track and field, wrestling, cheerleading, gymnastics, swimming, and cross country. If your child is joining a school team, recreational league, or competitive program, check with the organization ahead of time to find out whether a current sports physical is required and if there are any specific forms that need to be completed.

During a sports physical, a healthcare provider typically reviews the student-athlete’s medical and family history and performs a physical examination. The goal is to identify health concerns that could affect sports participation and make sure the athlete has an opportunity to discuss any symptoms or concerns before beginning a season. Although a sports physical might seem like a formality, it is an important part of preparing for athletic activity.

What Happens During a Sports Physical?

A sports physical may include:

  • Review of medical and family history
  • Discussion of previous injuries or medical conditions
  • Evaluation of current medications
  • Blood pressure and vital signs
  • Heart and lung examination
  • Musculoskeletal examination
  • Evaluation of flexibility, strength, and range of motion
  • Discussion of any symptoms or health concerns
  • Completion of required school or athletic participation forms

The specific requirements can vary depending on the school, athletic organization, or state. For Louisiana high school athletes, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) requires student-athletes to complete a physical examination and the appropriate medical history evaluation before participating in LHSAA athletics.

Does Insurance Cover Sports Physicals?

Sports physicals may or may not be covered by health insurance, depending on your specific insurance plan. Many insurance plans cover routine annual wellness or preventive exams, but a sports physical completed specifically for athletic participation may be considered a separate service. Coverage can also vary between insurance providers and plans. We accept Louisiana Medicaid, which currently covers sports physicals. If your insurance does not cover K-12 sports physicals, it will cost $35, which is due at the time of visit. Before scheduling, check with your insurance company or feel free to ask our team about available payment options and the cost of a sports physical by calling us at (504) 635-2273.

When Should my Child get a Sports Physical?

It is best to schedule a sports physical before the season begins rather than waiting until the first practice or tryout. Some schools and athletic programs require completed physical forms before a student can participate. Scheduling early can also give families time to address any concerns identified during the examination. If your child participates in multiple sports throughout the year, ask their healthcare provider or school athletic program about when another physical may be required.

Does my Child Need a Sports Physical Every Year?

Requirements vary by school and athletic organization. Many programs require student-athletes to have a current physical on file before participating. Because requirements can differ, families should check with their child’s school, coach, or athletic organization to confirm what documentation is required and when it must be completed.

What Should I Bring to a Sports Physical?

To help make the visit as easy as possible, bring:

  • Any required school or athletic physical forms
    • We provide a blank LHSAA form if needed
  • Glasses/contacts if worn

Parents should be prepared to discuss their child’s current medications, information about previous surgeries, injuries, or medical conditions, and information about family medical history. In addition, parents and their student-athlete may discuss any symptoms their child has experienced during exercise, such as chest pain, dizziness, fainting, unusual shortness of breath, or a racing heartbeat.

Why are Sports Physicals Important?

Most young athletes are healthy and able to participate in sports without restrictions. However, a sports physical provides an opportunity to identify potential health concerns and discuss ways to reduce the risk of injury, such as sprains or strains.

It is also an opportunity for athletes and parents to ask questions about training, previous injuries, exercise-related symptoms, and overall health. If a healthcare provider identifies a condition that could make sports participation unsafe, they may recommend that your child not participate. However, a medical concern does not automatically mean your child will be unable to play. Whenever possible, the goal is to identify ways for your child to participate safely while taking their individual health needs into account.

A sports physical does not replace regular preventative care. Children and teens should continue to receive routine wellness visits and recommended preventative screenings.
